UNCF - MERCK Science Initiative
CHANGING THE FACE OF LIFE SCIENCES INDUSTRY One Mind At A Time
GET AN OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME!
The financial support, experience and mentoring you need for a science career
The UNCF•Merck Science Initiative (UMSI) is an opportunity of a lifetime. The program provides support to outstanding African Americans who are pursuing studies and careers at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. The program provides scholarships and fellowships as well as valuable internships for undergraduates, mentoring and unmatched peer networking. Students are selected through a national competition, and UMSI awards allow them to devote their attention to education and research.
African Americans hold less than three percent of Ph.D.s in biology, chemistry and engineering. Opportunities created by UMSI aim to increase the numbers of minority students in the sciences and engineering.
Thanks to UMSI, more than 650 students and scholars have found support, knowledge, careers and advancement.
If you’re interested in science and engineering, a UMSI award can support your aspirations in a number of ways. This award provides:
Scholarships and award sof up to $25,000 with 15 scholarships to be awarded in 2015. Funds can be used toward tuition, room and board and fees. Awards are not transferable. The academic department of the recipient may also receive a departmental grant of up to $10,000.
Internship opportunities may be available and must be applied for separately.
Mentoring and network opportunities provided to help expand your scientific network.
Awards are made based on GPA, demonstrated interest in a science career and the ability to perform in a laboratory environment.
